The really sad thing is that she knew she was dying when she released Unless. She made a sort of public statement about it (or her publicist did). I can't imagine offering up your work, knowing it really is your last chance to say something to the world and to your readers.

I read about her illness and final(?) book in EW last year. She seemed like an incredible person. I mourn for her and for you, K., for losing a favorite author.

Was listening to Shields' Fresh Air interview on NPR while sitting in the drive-thru at Wendy's today. The interview was done after she finished the last book, and she just seemed...well, smart as hell, and enraptured to have finished another novel, and very aware of her own mortality. The only thing that kept me from crying was having to contend with the dimwits at Wendy's. They made me want to cry for other reasons entirely.
