Help!

Okay, for reasons which will remain mysterious, I need to make a list of things in the 1970s that should be revived, and things that should never be revived, under pain of death

Should be revived:
Raleigh choppers
Weebles

Should never be revived, ever:
Mind your Language and other racist sitcoms
Bubble perms
20 minute synthesiser solos by Rick Wakeman and other prog rock horrors.

Any more?

Never:
Ponchos. Particularly the woven sort that're brown and orange.

We don't mean the ones that Clint Eastwood wears.

Those ARE awesome.

We mean the frou frou dumbass ones girls are wearing to the office.

Ponchos are back, aren't they? I saw someone who shouldn't have been wearing one (ie: anyone over the age of five - particularly anyone who weighs over 100 pounds, or has breasts) yesterday and it was truly frightening.

Don't forget the platform shoes.

Can gauchos be far behind?

What should not be revived but unfortunately, has been revived? Polyester clothing on the young and hip. Aiee.

And the world needs more Big Wheels. Big Wheels should be so revived. The red and yellow ones.

Should be revived:

Free education - but that's probably only relevant to Australia.

UMmm... John Lennon?

As Token noted, Weebles have been revived.

They look nothing like old-skool Weebles, damn it! Nobody's gonna choke on those suckers!

Please, god, never again:
  • macrame ponchos
  • fringed shirts
  • bell-bottoms (yes, I know it's already too late on that one)
  • platform shoes (too late on that one, too)
  • disco music clap tracks
  • blue plastic cat's eye glasses frames
  • shag haircuts
  • Watergate

Stuff I miss:
  • Pop Rocks (the candy)
  • novelty songs (Ray Stevens, woot!)
  • M*A*S*H
  • Mork & Mindy
  • Moon missions
  • gas at $0.40/gallon
  • A&W drive-ins

The thing I miss most, is something that can't be revived:
  • The thrill of going to a movie, because you knew you wouldn't be able to watch it again later on the VCR or cable, and it would be a couple of years before one of the three television networks coughed up the money to run it...once...with commercials, and maybe at some point if it was popular enough it would get a second release in the theater but that almost never happened.

Pop Rocks are still around. Well, at least, I see them around here -- the Midwest/South -- a lot, despite knowing an appalling number of people who'd never heard of them until either I or my mother introduced them (usually in a work setting, because nothing is finer than shuffling coworkers into a closet to demonstrate the spark effect).

We still have A&Ws too, but they're not the same, alas.

Pop Rocks (the candy)

hee, everytime I hear that I think of the Simpsons candy festival ep. "See you in hell Candy Boys!"

Bwah!

I too miss the drive-ins. I was very small the last time I was at one but I still love the clip on trays.

Not revived:

Wide-wale corduroy jeans that make everybody look like a whale
hip huggers (oops!)
floppy hats with enormous flowers on them
white eye makeup
white lipstick
espadrilles
jeans that are striped length-wise
acid wash jeans (late '70s)
Jeans that are so tight that you can tell a person's "religion", even if they are female
Farrah Fawcett Hair
crocheted bikinis

remember those SuperJam Supergroups of the '70s and their 50 minute "jam solos"? Yeah -- Just say NO!

Should be revived:

Long, involved costume drama mini-series on television
excellent, cheeseball disaster movies
Battle of the Network Stars (USA): but this time, the D-list celebs should fight to the death

Maybe more later, but I'll shut up now.

Remembering very little of the 70s, I will nonetheless second the request for more 100-character, multi-generational, flouncy, tear-jerky costume dramas.

Also, The Towering Inferno. And Airplane. That was the late 70s, right?

Also, exciting bass beats in songs that are not recycled by every Tom, Dick and Puffy.

Should NOT be revived:

Too much facial hair on men - sideburns, bad mustaches etc.
Not washing enough (some of those hippies were RANK, man!)
Any garment with big, long fringe - No, unless you are Native American
Things that are not Afghans made of Granny Squares
Any appliance or piece of furniture that is: avacado green, harvest gold or ORANGE
"Swinging" as a lifestyle choice because it is just LAME, STING, OK????
White or pink plastic barrettes for anyone over the age of 5
Macrame wall hangings shaped like Owls.
Cheap looking amber or orange colored glass light fixtures or side panels on front doors.

Should be Revived

Fondue, because, tasty
Glam Rock because it's fun
Little House on the Prairie as a fad for kids
Long TV costume drama mini-series
Good variety shows on TV - I loved these as a kid
Good sketch format comedy in prime time - think Carol Burnett and Monty Python
We could use a Donald P. Bellesario nice-guy PI show like Rockford Files or Magnum.
WKRP in Cincinnati updated
Interest in the American Revolutionary period so we can remember what the fuck our government is about

I would totally settle for WKRP on DVD.

Yes, what a GREAT show. My whole family could watch it and everyone got something out of it. We kids liked the slapstick, the music and Johnny Fever. Mom appreciated the good scripting. Dad was all about the workplace comedy because he was actually the BOSS of someone like Les Nessman- guy lived with his Mom and wore special gloves to read the paper, etc. and knew salesmen like Herb.

>Fondue, because, tasty<

Yes yes.

I'm now the owner of a fondue pot as a result of the parental move. Fondue should come back.

I agree with every single one of these.

I would also like to add to the Should Never Return list:
Tube Tops

Even though they've been back for a while. Away! Away, vile oversized rubber bands!

Should be revived:
Frye boots
Gunne Sax everything
Slender women (i.e. not me) in jeans tucked into their boots
Feminism
Liberalism

Should not be revived:
Richard M. Nixon

I so TOTALLY wore Gunne Sax. Notably to my cousin's wedding and for a formal choir thing I did.

Gunne Sax was too expensive for me, but I did have two long Gunne Sax dresses that I loved. I ordered one on E-bay a couple of weeks ago, forgetting that Gunne Sax always cut for the girlish figure and that even their 16 wouldn't fit an adult woman. My daughter took one look at it and said "I am going to cook supper for my family and then we will have a Bible Reading!". Heathen.

Should be revived:
Raleigh choppers
Weebles

You are in my head! Just yesterday I was thinking about Weebles and went so far as to look them up on Ebay. Man, if I still had mine, I could make a killing on them.

No farking gaucho pants. ESPECIALLY not when worn with argyle socks.

Should not come back:

Leg warmers. Unless you really are a ballerina.
Satin shorts. 'nuff said.
"The Gong Show." Because if we hadn't had that, we might not be suffering through idiotic things like "Fear Factor" and "Dog Eat Dog" now.

Should come back:

"The Carol Burnett Show." I want an all Carol Burnett, all the time cable channel.
"Bugs Bunny" cartoons. Unedited.
Mood rings. Of course, mine was always black because my hands were always cold, but dude, what fun. ;-)
Ditto on the novelty songs. I loved "The Streak." ;-)
