My friends, I love that you care, because I care too. But I think there’s some misunderstanding of what I was trying to say in the last post. No, for the timeline-obsessed, you are never going to jam into the puzzle every reference everyone has ever made to how old they are, or how long they’ve been practicing medicine. Certainly not if you’re taking them literally; and possibly not even if you’re taking them as kidding or speaking colloquially.
Let me quote for a minute from a response I made to a comment:
“I'm not saying there may not be continuity issues, here or elsewhere; but it's also legitimate to note that when characters speak colloquially they talk the way people talk -- they round numbers up or down, and they joke. I've never forgotten that once on the X-Files Mulder told his ex-girlfriend, "I'm cursed with a photographic memory." I assumed at the time he was saying in his smartass way that he couldn't forget the hurt she'd caused him, and I was taken aback by the number of fans who interpreted it absolutely literally and felt it was later contradicted by canon. I'm not saying that it might not have turned out to be literal; I'm just saying that when people talk, they don't speak with the exactitude of Wikipedia. Similarly, when a woman says that she's 38, one may choose to believe it or not. When the guy fixing my sink argues with me about the cause and says, "Look, lady, I've been doing this for 20 years," I don't count backwards to exactly that month 20 years before and assume that's when he got his plumbing license.
Again, I'm not saying the House timeline is free of continuity tangles. I know for a fact it's not. (And since I'm often trying to patch new and old canon together, may I say, boy do I know.) But there seems to be a certain amount of slack that's understood in real life that is not always offered to fictional characters. We actually discuss this when debating our options with lines of dialogue -- and I mean, not only writers, but actors and directors. How if a certain line were changed to something more specific it might fit better, but it would sound weird. You do the very best you can and hope that that part of the audience that's paying close attention will understand.”
So, Doris, you’re claiming it will all make sense if we just aren’t literal?
No, I have specifically not said that. I would love if it did, but it’s unlikely to ever happen. (Though I have a personal timeline that I believe actually would make sense, if you’re not absolutely literal, of House saying he’s practiced for 20 years, his present age, knowing Cuddy when she was an undergrad, etc. But it’s dependent on some things you’re probably never going to see in the show, including what I like to believe happened during “House: The Lost Years,” so let’s not pretend it’s going to solve anything.)
The post is saying something else. It’s saying – well, simply that I care, that I try, that these characters are important to me and I make a concerted effort to fit whatever I’m doing into what’s gone before. I’m saying that Matt and I pulled every reference to House and Cuddy’s shared past, had our work double-checked, argued things out with a number of people, discussed the fan Wikipedia reference where the assumption about Hopkins had been made, and even came up with internal character reasons why Michigan was first and how he got into Hopkins. (Nothing you’re ever going to see, again, but you want it to hang together in your mind if you’ve got to write it.)
So when you hear stuff that suggests people think you’ve been sitting at the keyboard eating chips and typing at random, without making the slightest effort to check canon, because clearly you don’t give a damn, you think, no, I want people to know I do care. Because I’ve never forgotten when I was a kid, watching a show called It Takes a Thief. Throughout the series, the hero would say, “I’m a thief, like my father and my grandfather before me.” Then suddenly there was an episode where a woman asked him why he became a thief, and he told a story about having been a geologist and getting into thievery almost accidentally. And this wasn’t presented as a lie. You can tell the difference; even as a kid, I could tell the difference. They expected you to accept this – for this episode. A few episodes later we’d go back to the previous story.
I’ll never forget how betrayed I felt, because I loved that series with a love only a pre-teen can feel. And I thought, “Someone had to have noticed that. If nobody else, the star must have noticed. And yet nobody fixed it. Which means… I care more than they do.” It was disillusioning and depressing.
Which is why I’m a continuity believer. I know Oscar and Felix met three different ways, but in my own little world, I work to make anything I add fit. I write 600-page science fiction novels in which I create entire universes that I try to make fully consistent. So it’s a bit disconcerting when a friend points me to things like this:
“Apparently, Doris Egan has tweeted an explanation for the confusion over the Michigan/Hopkins timeline. However if you have to do that, you've been rumbled.
I'll never understand how TV writers can get continuity wrong in this information age: they can post anonymously in fan forums and ask obsessive fans for info (because fans know their TV faves better than the show's own production team - FACT) or they can bloody Google it.
Maybe Doris Egan and/or Matt Lewis' mistake means that other House writers (and TV scriptwriters in general) will be a tad more careful in the future.”
And I think, no. You may or may not like the results, but dammit, it’s not lack of care or effort; I don't want that impression to stand. I want people to know that’s not the way I work. I believe it would be disrespectful of the love people invest in the characters.
None of this means you won't see errors in my writing, in TV or in books; it just means those errors will be there because I'm an idiot, not because I don't take my work seriously.

Okay, here are the nerves. I am absolutely bricking it about the exam tomorrow. I've been fine, I've even been somewhat cocky about it, but now, now I've got the most horrible plunging feeling in my stomach. Tomorrow, I'm going to just walk into the room and dance. There won't be time for warm-ups or final rehearsals. I'll arrive, change my shoes, dance four dances back-to-back, and then I'll leave. No time for conversation, last minute tips or pep talks. I'll just walk in and dance.
Fuck, I'm nervous. I'm excited. I'm nervous. I can't wait.
Dance!

In anticipation of the end of radiation (and with it the end of active treatment) I'm doing a few things. And a poll. 1. I have begun the process of downloading and watching all the shows I am behind on. Hopefully I will be all caught up this week which will give me stuff to talk about, and the ability to click on cut-tags on my f'list. Actually catching up on and getting back into the habit of reading LJ regularly also on the list. 2. I signed up for festivids. In addition to just being fun, I'm hoping it will kickstart my vid mojo. Also, I have been jealous for years of Yultide and now I don't have to be! Have you signed up yet dear vidder friends? The more of us the better, and the more likely the Jo/Blair Facts of Life vid that should exist in this universe gets made. Or, y'know, whatever small fandom vid that floats your boat, though I am secretly judging you if Jo/Blair is not on the list. 3. It is time to start thinking for real about the Fuck Cancer Guitar/DJ Hero party that I wish to throw in celebration of being done. This last nine months have kicked the shit out of me and I need a bit of exhale time before this happens, so I'm thinking early December. Which brings us to the poll, Poll #1485468
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 8 I would probably be able to make it some time in the first two weeks of December This date (or dates) work best for me

I woke up at 8:20 this morning and that was it, I was done sleeping, even though I went to bed at 2 am. Sigh. Since I was up, I made these popovers, which came out really well. Only one of them deflated. Hopefully they freeze well. Last night I made apple cake again, with Fuji instead of gala apples this time (not planned - just what I grabbed in Food Emporium on the way home), and it is good too. Plus, the whole apartment smells like cinnamon while it's baking. Then I watched this week's Friday Night Lights. Following on from my link to The Ad Hominem Fallacy Fallacy, londonkds wonders how legitimate it is to say "This person has previously shown themselves to be ignorant/misinformed/lying/batshit on this subject on several occasions, therefore I have better things to do with my time than to rigorously investigate all their arguments this time". I've replied on the original thread, but I thought I'd create a new post with my reply in: Reminds me of Yudkowsky's stuff on reversed stupidity and the follow up, Argument Screens Off Authority. If someone is reliably wrong (a well informed liar), you can learn something by listening to them: you just increase the weight you give to beliefs which contradict what they say on topics where you know they tend to lie. But this might not be useful, if you already strongly believe stuff which contradicts what they say. In practice, the people are ignorant or batshit haven't carefully studied how to be wrong. There are more ways to be wrong than right, so they probably are wrong, but you don't learn anything by listening to them, because their statements aren't tangled up with the truth at all. As Yudkowsky and brokenhut say, you can decide not to listen to such people because life is too short, but that decision shouldn't influence your opinion on the truth of their argument (though it's hard not to be influenced in practice). So I think your quoted statement is a justifiable one as long as you don't append "and I'll believe their argument less as a result". Suber's stuff on logical rudeness covers the case where your belief that they're batshit is because of some theory you hold which includes explanations of how all critics of the theory are batshit (examples exist in evangelical Christianity, atheism and feminism, that I've seen). ISTM that such a theory can't be used to dismiss critical arguments, though it can be used to explain why so many people apparently don't believe the theory. Am having a lovely weekend so far, helped by the fact that Scotland won their first rugby match in bloody ages today, 23-10 against Fiji, who are a proper team and everything. Yay! Spent most of yesterday reading some of the dw_femslash stories, that ficathon always throws up some cracking fic, but of the ones I read yesterday two that were absolutely outstanding: And Explode Into Space by biichan (Donna/Ace) Which was written for me, and has a time travelling motorbike, Ace in a tux and Big Fucking Dinosaurs. It's like all my favourite things were smushed together into one totally fabulous fic. Show Me More of This Traken Thing Called Kissing by doyle_sb4 (Tegan/Nyssa) Which is a lovely hilarious cuddly toy of a fic, that I just want to hug forever. It makes me all nostalgic for Five era's dysfunctional time travelling family. While I'm here I shall also rec this Morgana/Gwen/Arthur heartbreaking vid of heartbreakinessYes, so Merlin's on a bit, and it's Waters of Mars tomorrow. Plus, I have to see if I know any Fijians that I could call and gloat.

Yesterday, I wore my new black jumper over a black tshirt and with the indigo jeans. It occasioned a lot of positive comments from work colleagues, so we can chalk that up to a win, I feel.
Today, I have been wearing:
1. A pair of black briefs; and 2. Occasionally, a navy dressing gown.
Which is to say, I've not even bothered getting dressed. Yay!
It is really windy outside, and there has been a lot of rain. We've not had a great deal of daylight. Outside my bedroom window, the branches of the trees in the garden have been leaping and bowing all day long, rearing, reaching and genuflecting with every furious gust. It's been beautiful. I love the sound of the wind racing around the house, that sort of hollow grumbling boom. I love that it's chilly and dark. This time of year is my favourite - autumn shading towards winter. I feel so much more connected to the landscape. I wonder if that's because I was born in August, so this time of year is the first I really experienced? I dunno. I just love it.
Tomorrow is my exam. I can't wait.

Speaking in regards to the Fort Hood shooting, Mark Shea accuses other people of being namby-pamby in regards to Muslims. "It was a spectacular display of deliberate willed stupidity," he bellows, "by a media culture that demonstrates repeatedly it does not want to acknowledge that Islam tends to breed such acts of terror with startling frequency." (He also complains that Roland Emmerich is not destroying a mosque in his latest disaster porn movie. Religious conservatives complain about very odd things nowadays.) To prevent future "acts of terror," we should employ "theological and philosophical profiling." [W]e treat ideas as though they are genetic traits we can't help having and refuse to acknowledge the possibility that ideas have consequences. We regard theological and philosophical profiling with the same horror as racial profiling. But here's the thing: Skin color doesn't kill. Thoughts of the heart, however, are exactly where murder begins. That doesn't mean instituting Thought Police, but it does mean that when somebody (or some particular ideological group) demonstrates a pattern of sympathy for violence, we are idiots to ignore it.The bit about "Thought Police" reflects a certain awareness on Mark Shea's part that he opposes scrutinizing "the heart" concerning another matter -- hate crimes. Here is his positionHate Crimes bills are just attempts to destroy free speech and thought. If you beat my brains in because you want my wallet, you are guilty of murder. If you beat my brains in because I am a Catholic, you are guilty of murder. If you hate me because I'm a Catholic, you are entitled to your opinion. It's a free country. Hating somebody for their race, sexual orientation, class, gender or whatnot is a sin. It's not a crime. Only mischief will result from such legislation. It's designed to penalize Christians for thinking homosexuality a sin. It will end by penalizing everybody for thinking any thought unacceptable to Caesar. So, consideration of motives after a crime is a Thought Police tactic. Marking certain people to be potential threats before they've done anything is not a Thought Police tactic. Shea isn't clear what exactly should be done with such pre-judged folk. Should they be fired from their jobs? Should they be denied gun licenses? The one vaguely concrete action he proposes is becoming "theologically literate again" and returning "to the sanity of the Catholic Faith." In other words, he plans to stop terrorism by getting everybody to become Catholic. Of course, that's pretty much his solution to everything. Tags: wuh?

I thought, therefore I twittered: It's a Job Seekers Network Group that meets once a week, but perhaps it will spur me on to get more organized and on track with what I'm pursuing. It gives me pause to realize that everyone there was older than 35 (a participant polled the room) which may just be a reflection of what job seekers make it to a Cambridge strip mall setting or whatever. This I heard about at the Boston Web Designers meetup the night before. There's some considerable free software on offer there, including Microsoft Expression and Silverlight (their answer to Dreamweaver and Flash, respectively) which wouldn't hurt me to know, especially if it ties in well with Visual Studio....) Had to retweet this, because it's obvious both of them have read my favorite-ever X-Men comics story sequence, not to mention the rather cowardly reaction by some conservatives to -- eek! -- bringing Guantanamo detainees onto mainland US and actually treating them like the war prisoners they are. I subsequently crashed and burned by 8:30 PM -- too tired to do more than go upstairs and see if I could sleep. And it turned out that I could... which, you know, if I can do that, I really really need it. Still, it's been a busy week, and most surprisingly one that isn't devoid of achievement.... What should happen the next time we spot a potential Nidal Malik Hasan -- another violent Muslim ready to perform his own personal jihad? Give him an editorial in the Washington Post. Well, really, the Washington Post shouldn't do that. The paper should have some standards. Sometimes, though, it's hard to pinpoint the standards of its editors. For instance, a man can declare that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity" and speak other such gems, but the Post will still give him a spot to rant about, among other things, people "walking their dogs." On the other hand, the Post hasn't turned the mike over to John Hagee. For spewing a lot of violent apocalyptic gibberish, you have to settle for being pals with Joseph Lieberman. ( "He is a man of God." -- Lieberman) Or you can be a member of an influential lobby that cites Hitler and Stalin as organization models. Whenever a Hasan causes destruction, some Christians boast that their co-religionists hardly ever do such things. And if an abortionist gets shot somewhere, Christians are quick to apologize. Of course they are. They have nothing to lose by denouncing such acts. And at the end of the day, even Christianity's most wool-headed adherents have something to gain in America. I have no problem with analyzing the beliefs of Muslims. But such analysis has to go beyond philosophy. It has to look at power. And when you have power, why would you go on a spree shooting? I don't often post work-specific stuff here but this is so outrageous that I must. Aminatou Haidar is a human rights activist from the Western Sahara, most of which has been occupied by Morocco for the last thirty years. Last year she was given the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Award; last month she was in New York to receive the Train Foundation's Civil Courage Prize. On her return to the Western Sahara yesterday morning, she was arrested by the Moroccans, purportedly for failing to complete her immigration form on landing. This was pretty much announced in advance by King Mohammed VI of Morocco in a speech a week ago, when he announced that "it is time to stop outlaws taking advantage of civic freedoms to agitate from within". This in turn was probably helped by Hillary Clinton the week before endorsing the Moroccan policy on the illegal occupation of other people's territory. I know some of you guys are fans of Hillary's, but really this is disgusting. The EU is not much better. It can put out a statement condemning Azerbaijan's treatment of bloggers, but I haven't heard a peep from them on the arrest of someone who happens to be awkward for the Moroccans. It is a shameful performance. Tags: eu, world: us, world: western sahara

Hello! This is my first year doing yuletide - so if you're nervous please be assured that I almost certainly feel worse - and my first attempt at doing one of these letters. First, the good news, you have volunteered to write in one of these fandoms which means you rock. Go you! Also, I am ridiculously easy to please and I will like almost anything. I would also vastly prefer that you write something that you enjoy rather than tie yourself in knots trying to please me. That said, my only absolute bulletproof squick is non-con, so, please, no. Things that make me especially happy: Female characters kicking ass, gen, humour. ( In which I bibble amount my requests - Christopher Brookmyre, Megan Whalen Turner, Being Human )Of course you should feel free to ignore any of that. But if you want more information here are a couple of links: Things I have written and Things other people have written that I love

I need OTC medication recommendations.
I have The Cold From Hell. Sneezing, runny nose, horrible cough which is trying to tear my esophagus apart. I do not have a fever or any aching (other than my head from constantly sneezing, blowing my nose and sinus pressure, and my throat from being attacked by Wolverine every time I cough).
I have been taking DayQuil, which always used to work for me before in suppressing these symptoms so I could get my work done. Not so much anymore. Here are my problems:
1) Codeine makes me vomit, so cough syrup with codeine is out. 2) Sudafed thinks "Please stop my nose from running" means "I would like a myocardial infarction." 3) Afrin works great when my nose is stuffed up, but when it's runny, all it does is make it a gazillion times more runny.
I'm doing the zinc stuff, and I know it's definitely reduced the time the cold would naturally have taken (the progression from tickly throat to stuffy nose to sneezing to coughing as it moves from head to chest has been superspeedy), but I need this to STOP so that I can get these essays finished.
I have a Walgreens across the street, so anything you can buy there is fair game.
Help?
ETA: I cannot bear spicy foods.
