I went a little OTT, pt1

It started with this thought: how can I possibly leave a comment like "I'm so sorry your gerbil died, I know how painful it is to lose a pet" and look like I am not taking the piss because my icon has some vapid actor's face and a dorky quote from The Birdy Song on it. ("oooooh, with a little bit of this and a little bit of that and Shake. Your. Arse. La la la." A great wedding classic) I wanted something more neutral.

So I thought -- well, what do I like that's serious? I like deserts, mountains, sea, fish and arctic landscapes. Also cake. I do not like flowers or teddy bears.

I once should have had this conversation with my former boyfriend. He was a big, old romantic and I am really, really very much not. He would insist on buying teddy bears and flowers when he came to visit even though he was perpetually skint because he was using his degree in physics to work at a printers. I tried to tell him not to do it without sounding like an ungrateful trollop but mostly failed. I was earning about four times as much as he was at the time (though he didn't tell me this until we'd broken up. I thought the differential was about half. He always lied about his wages before that and I was hurt that he would have thought I gave a damn.)

I once almost cried when he *finally* got the message that I didn't need all that hearts and flowers nonsense and he should save his money -- he made me a mix CD and a strawberry trifle. I cannot believe that's not stitched on a sampler anywhere: "love is trifle"

I just looked up his name on the internet. He has his own website. He's incredibly talented (which I knew five years ago) and he's finally doing what he should have done instead of physics, which is a course in animation. *Very* good looking now.

I hate the internet. Feh. :::Spits on tiny, newly glowing torch and resists urge to commit seppuku via email.:::

Anyway. Moving on in all senses of the words...

I got a couple of BBC DVDs for Christmas, The Blue Planet and Life in the Freezer and, after rewatching, made some icons. I got somewhat carried away, so if anyone would like to use any of these, have at it. As always, should xsabx wish for an image in her chosen dimensions, just say the word. (Also, some still have ridiculous words on them. Cope.)

Oh, I love the VMars ones. I'm gonna snag the Keith and Veronica one, because it's lovely.

Glad you liked them. One of the most attractive aspects of the show is the bond between V and her dad (and between her and Wallace)

You are amazing. I'm snagging 88 (I've been looking for a music icon) and 98, because.

And, silly, love is ice cream.

Glad you liked.

I think love can be ice cream *and* trifle. Let's not be absolutist here.

Wow, these are beautiful. I'm taking Starbuck and a couple of others :)

Thanks for the note.

When I get home, I'm snagging a gazillion of these. They are beautiful.

I hate that the freakin' internet is a pathway to dredging up your own personal ghosts. Walk away! Walk away!

Oh I know, but he's like *one* click away. Still. Stand firm etc. etc.

Ohhhhh! #5! Thank you! Polar bears! :>D
Aug. 9th, 2005 10:31 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you liked the bears. And the penguins. *g*

(Also, LOGAN!!!!!!!!!)

Will be snagging 27 and 115. I adore 125, but it deserves to go to someone who will actually use its snark potential more.
Aug. 9th, 2005 10:32 pm (UTC)
Hoped you might like that one.

As for the snark -- it is not limited. Snark is an endless raw material, waiting to be plucked from the ether! *g*

Eeeee! I'm seriously in love with the seals and the penguins! Thank you for making so many! Have taken and will credit. :)
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:18 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you liked them. I had you in mind when I was making a couple.
Aug. 9th, 2005 05:58 pm (UTC)
So this is what you've been up to. I was thinking you'd been terribly quiet.

And... OMG best icon post EVER! Eleventy-one111!!!!

Vonnie will have your babies for #122, because portmanteaus make the baby jesus weep. #95 makes me snicker helplessly, and #88 makes me wonder if you were somehow hiding in Sal's living room during Lakefest. May have to grab #19 and a bunch of the other wildlife ones, they're just stunning.

Missed you, btw. What have you been up to?

There's a chance the company will send me to the Arctic Circle in a few weeks; I promise to take pictures.

If you're ever here in the spring we shall go see the Elephant Seals breeding at Ano Nuevo.

I haven't been just making icons, it's more that I've been working so much that I am out of words when I come home and only pictures will do. Also, work just *sucks* at the moment. Sucks. Sucks. Sucks. It'll be much better in a couple of months I hope.

I think "mana mana" has a universal sort of goodness *g*

Oh how wonderful. Sub-arctic places are incredibly beautiful if you get to see them during summer. If it's more than four weeks hence and you're lucky you may even get to see the aurora borealis (I once saw it in September while staying at my grandfather's house) I would love to see any pictures you had.

Seriously, you make the most beautiful icons I've seen on LJ. Clear, clean, gorgeous designs. Damn.

Snagging 20, 25 and 128, if that's okay. And, damn, that's restrained of me, because I am so so so in love with the Spinal Tap and the Muppets and the Eddie Izzard and the sheer gorgeousness of the VM and the penguins and - er, well, all of them.
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:24 pm (UTC)
Blimey, that's high praise. I'm glad you liked them. Feel free to nick any you like, they won't be taken down until photobucket croaks on me.
Aug. 9th, 2005 06:18 pm (UTC)
Those are great. I will probably aquire a couple of the antarctic ones sometime in the next week or two - I am about to sort my icons! (Oooh - painful!)

Now of course the BIG question is - which one do you recommend for death of gerbil? Or divorce of tapir for that matter?

Also - you are right - love is a well-made trifle. Forget the ex - these days he would animate a trifle anyway - look for a pastry chef! But not Gary Rhodes - unless you can support his oil habit - both olive and hair (unless it is olive oil on his hair of course....)

Update - I am desperately trying not to do anything useful or productive - and so have found time to come back and acquire (see I can spell it proper when I try!).

I have copied numbers 8,18,41,55, and 91 - thank you so much.

These are so totally beautiful and funny! I'm stealing both nature and the TAP and VM!!! Like, tons of them. I'll let you know which ones.

Your ex- sounds intriguing, btw.

Mine just sound like assholes.

:: sigh ::
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:32 pm (UTC)
Glad you like them. Please take any that you wish.

Your ex- sounds intriguing, btw.

He has his faults but for all that he's really a very good man.

Mine just sound like assholes.

And there's more than enough of those in the world.

Beautiful icons! I snagged a couple -- the deep sea fish that says things are going to get ugly, the "bollocks" penguin. Are those perchance the silicon-based tubeworms that are not supposed to exist? ::BluePlanetLove::

I join you in your hatred of the Internet. I have the problem of people I'd rather not finding me -- this year so far it's an ex and two students from the mid-90s who think I'm their mom. I'm sorry it made you down! :o(
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:37 pm (UTC)
I note with joy your affinity for the word "bollocks" *g*

And yes, those are the silicon-based tubeworms. Jeez, you know your Blue Planet.
