I totally don't get the reference.

(OMG so bored. Trying to find housing vacancy rates for Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. And traffic data. Don't you people know the glories of centralized databases? Argh!)

May. 11th, 2006 11:18 pm (UTC)
It was a comedy show called Who Dares Wins with Philip Pope dressed up as Leonardo Da Vinci and he goes "I AM. A. Geeeeeeniiiioooooooous" in the most ridiculous Italian accent. Maybe you had to be there.

No, we do not know the glory of centralised databases, I suspect, because we were all about the glories of typewriters for a bit too long.

1. I had never realised how fast you read until last week. I was mightily impressed.

2. LIFE ON MARS for the love of God, before David E Kelley ruins it for everyone.

3. Blue.

4. Your openness to new people and experiences

5. First, I think. An email conversation after a thing you wrote about Scully and a church which had this beautiful wistfulness and clarity of expression that was rare in fandom. Still is. Other than that, Guatemalan jacket.

6. An exceedingly smart wolf.

7. What book most shaped the way you write? Dunnett is obvious but I don't think so, somehow.

Work is for suckers. Do me and I'll do you right back. I mean, not in the sexy way. Or in the assassin-bullet-to-the-back-of-the-head way.

I have a two-track mind, these days.

I have a two-track mind, these days.

Ah, but such interesting tracks

1. I've never felt so certain that I would see a familiar name in the credits of something I love as with you.

2. The band Elbow, but go for Leaders of the Free World or Cast of Thousands.

3. Green. Duh.

4. You don't follow the herd

5. A Chinese restaurant in LA. I don't know why that one is so clear.

6. A watchful, amused cat.

7. Do you have an idol? If so, who?

1. Your icons are the funniest set that I know. They're all different yet I could probably guess that they are yours.

2. I think you should download some Imogen Heap. Or Cocteau Twins. I don't know how ethereal you like your music.

3. Orange is obvious and might well make you roll your eyes. So I think...

a dramatic scarlet. Blood on tarmac-style, startling red.

4. The way you taught those kids at the school you were at. You seemed to be the kind of teacher I wish I had had.

5. The first memory is very odd. You impinged upon my consciousness, rather than striding onstage. *g* Clearest: Spring Training, sitting by the lake I think. You were a very sure, calm presence. Also funny.

6. A preturnaturally smart lemur. Rare. Nocturnal. Dextrous. I'm sure you see the resemblance.

7. Well, I should probably quote your reply to me. Also, I shall be doing that shortly, when I get my arse into gear, so...

What animal would you pick for yourself? If you had to pick an avatar or daemon or whatever?

"A tisket, a tasket, a head in a basket,
It cannot respond to the questions you ask it."
May. 11th, 2006 11:59 pm (UTC)
But an LJ presence, however far away
Can usually respond while at play

1. I can't quite work out your politics from the links you post but I invariably find them interesting.

2. West Ham United! Croquet! Haiku in esperanto! Interpretive dance!

Failing that, Pratchett if you've not already tried some.

3. Blue, I think. A rich dark blue.

4. The way you write about grifyn and the uberkid and the way she writes about you.

5. I remember you writing an XF story that was very much against the prevailing "wisdom". I liked that.

6. A wolf, but that may be the icon I am seeing

7. Are you writing some kind of novel these days? I always hoped you had the time and were.

Dolly Parton's "Seven Bridges Road" has a plunking sound in it that sounds exactly my "you have email!" sound. It's very confusing. Possibly more confusing than the question "why are you listening to Dolly Parton" but only just.

See above for the reference. I am wishing now that I could find a .wav of it. Here is some "Who Dares Wins" I cannot vouch for whether it's funny or not. I was 13 or 14 when it aired and everything with swearing in is funny at that age:

Anyway, onto the stuff you actually give a damn about:

1. I loved the story about the mango. It had acts and everything

2. Stasiland by Anna Funder.

3. Purple like lupins.

4. You number your entries randomly and I can never predict what you're going to write next.

5. Presently it is the mango ode

6. There are going to be a lot of cat comparisons in this meme, I can tell, but you do remind me of a cat.

7. Did you once have Ceri Seel in your keyword/interest thing? I remember spelunking on the internet one night and I think I came across your LJ in an unrelated hunt to do with Sam Youd and The Tripods etc etc
May. 11th, 2006 11:30 pm (UTC)
Oh let me have it.
May. 12th, 2006 12:33 am (UTC)
1. I have started growling "son of a bitch" like you do. I love the way you swear. It sounds like you're contemplating real damage.

2. Crocheting.

3. You're a strange warm grey, only when you get up close it's actually a very intricate wallpaper pattern made up of red roses and silver fern

4. You're like Granny Weatherwax. (This is a huge compliment btw, just in case you were growling "son of a bitch" under your breath there)

5. Clearest: Almost spontaneously combusting from glee when we accidentally found that weird, beautiful church on top of the tor in Somerset, and there was the rainbow.

6. Eagle

7. Policeman or pirate?
May. 11th, 2006 11:41 pm (UTC)
Oh, me. Go for it.
May. 12th, 2006 01:03 am (UTC)
1. You would probably be unamazed by how similar editorial meetings are across the world. I occasionally imagine you in mine, rolling your eyes *g*

2. I'm running out of challenging stuff here. I'll say Stasiland by Anna Funder because I think everyone should read it.

3. Orange. A warm orange with the vaguest suggestion of ruddy brown.

4. You're straightforward and funny.

5. Emailing me at work over the embargo-busting maybe?

6. A smarter than the average, amiable bear with claws in reserve. (I was trying to think of a clever social animal but I was heading monkeywards and that seemed unwise. *g*)

7. You can be anywhere, doing anything for a living. Where are you and what are you doing?

Happy Friday! (nice to see you on the cyberblock)

1. I think you may be the most erudite poster on my friends list. I always look forward to reading what you have to say because I can seldom predict what it will be.

2. Radio 4 streaming on the internet.

3. I want to say blue but I find I associate you with black bisected by a slash of bright arterial red. I don't think there is a deep synaesthetic reasoning behind it -- I think you may have been wearing a red scarf last time I saw you

4. You seem to have a meditative, thoughtful nature. Also you do something which is actually useful.

5. Being forced *forced I say!* to look through the books under Waterloo Bridge on the South Bank

6. One of the big cats. One of the ones that's all intelligent eyes, shadows and grace

7. ultimate holiday destination?

1. You make the best guacamole I have ever tasted

2. Life on Mars. The BBC version. It's like a cracked out cross between supernatural thriller and 70s cop drama

3. A kind of lightning crack blue, that pale yet vivid shade you get in summer storms

4. You live and think with passion and gusto.

5.I like the memory of chatting with you and your mum in Greenwich. That was such a nice day.

6. This is starting to become the hardest question on the list, just because I want to avoid the boringly inevitable cat or dog. A Thoroughbred horse, of affectionate temperament with the occasional flash of anger.

7. Did you ever consider taking an arts direction or were you always fonder of the sciences?
May. 12th, 2006 12:08 am (UTC)
Bibbiti Bobbity Boo!

(I'd type other words from the song, but I won't even try to pretend I know how to spell them.)
May. 12th, 2006 09:40 am (UTC)
1. You and Bono, man, it's epic.

2.I've been listening to Teddy Thompson lately and I think you might like him. His album is called Seperate Ways. Limewire "Shine So Bright" and "I should Get Up" for a taster.

3. Yellow like celandines

4.I love your enthusiasm for your passions and the way you write about it

5. A very tired conversation on the sofa in Robbie's former apartment.

6. A chocolate labrador: smart, affectionate, pretty

7. What's Bono *like*? *g* or failing that, if you could go anywhere on holiday, where would it be?

1. Whenever I imagine southern California, the travelogue in my head has your voice.

2. Write a chicklit novel. God, it would be so fantastic.

3. The dusky pink of late summer flowers

4. Well, I think we have discussed how you're one of the funniest human beings on earth as far as I am concerned. So what I like most is how kind you are, how empathetic.

5. Being in a car, with you, stereo blazing, and you yelling "rollercoaster, whooo!" and lifting your hands off the wheel as we go downhill.

6. A silvery cat, watching what's going on from a window sill where it sits in the warm afternoon sun.

7. In this forum? Okay. Have you ever considered living elsewhere?

1. You're one of a triumvirate of New York LJers whose voices sound like the city to me -- I think it's a certain appealingly smart-alecky staccato way of expressing yourselves and a tough outlook. Not without kindness, but no messing about either.

2.I've been loving Imogen Heap lately and will repeat that recommendation.

Failing that, a book called "Beyond Black" by Hilary Mantel, which I've just started and which I am *loving*

3. Tempted as I am by the New Yorkers' quotidian black... the very sultry orange that's the last breath of fire in a sunset over a smokey cityscape before midnight blue takes over.

4. Your omnivorous curiosity and the fact that you wield the power of verbal spank judiciously. You have to have way more driveby idiots than I do, given your fannish profile but you never seem to be nasty

5. I used to read your Diaryland diary way back at work when I was working nights. I think you were writing about X-Men then.

6. The head meerkat. The one keeping a lookout for changing conditions. A smart, intensely social animal, in touch with its environment

7. Is there any fandom you were not involved in that you wanted to play in for a while just because of the people?

May. 12th, 2006 11:55 pm (UTC)
1. I love that you like zombies. Zombies are just so cool and I like the way you write about them. I like that your love is pure *g*

2. Download The Line Of Beauty and tell me what you think.

3. The dark green of evergreen forests, a strong, clean colour. (Dark green and orangey red is the colour of Italy btw)

4. I *love* the way you write about things you love, with affection and optimism and precision, cutting them slack but also pointing out the faults.

5. Earliest is probably some post on Scullyfic I liked. Clearest: Your post after Chosen which was just full of love and detail

6. A penguin. One of the small, sleek ones like a chinstrap or Adelie, which darts through the water with crisp elegance, trailing bubbles and playing with its fellows.

7. How do you think having two languages has affected the way you think?
May. 12th, 2006 01:00 am (UTC)
Hmm, yes please. If the offer's still on.
May. 13th, 2006 12:14 am (UTC)
1. I think your LJ design is one of the most simple yet elegant that I have seen. I love that style of poster

2. Try to get to Krakow this summer. It's a beautiful place

3. A warm teal colour

4. I like your generosity of spirit, which is evident in the way that you write about what you love and your family and the fact that you haven't brained a customer with a slab of marble yet.

5. Chatting with you while walking along the South Bank and thinking "good god. *Barnsley*" *g*

6. A wrasse or one of the other brightly coloured fish on the Great Barrier Reef -- attuned to environment, gregarious, curious

7. What was it about Farscape that particularly captured your love?
