Everything I love is made in Wales

I am bored and you people are not updating enough and entertaining me. Therefore, meme.

Comment here and I will
a) Tell you why I friended you.
b) Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a colour, a photo, etc.
c) Tell you something I like about you.
d) Tell you a memory I have of you.
e) Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
f) Tell you my favourite user pic of yours.
g) in return, you must post this on your own lj. Bugger that.

And now, I must write stuff and stop being such a twat.

Okay, I'll bite. (:

a) I had sort of known of you for a long time because of XF fandom and C and you wrote interesting things and made terrific videos;
b) The song Not Only Human by Heather Nova, which was the first vid I ever watched that really blew me away, that said here is a form which doesn't just have to be the shots we like set to music, it can also be a story, a statement, an artform;
c) You're generous in explaining your craft and pointing to things you like;
d) Talking to you in C's kitchen that time. Not sure you had the least idea who I was but never mind;
e) How did you start vidding?
f) I love this one best

a) I used to read a lot of friendsfriends when I was at work and I used to look for your posts because they were always about something interesting, rather than being memes or "god I am so bored". It was a bit of a no-brainer once I did it really

b) I suppose I associate you with Doctor Who fandom now because you were the first person on my flist who wrote about the fandom *and* the show. I'd stayed away from the fandom since I was a teenager, despite loving Who for as long as I can remember. However, that seems a bit unfair, so I will say MSTK.

c) That you're erudite, that you have a good sense of humour; that you write posts that are about things you love and things you dislike and include *why*, which people do less often than you would think; that your comments strings on your posts are always a fantastic laugh.

d) I could tell you about laughing at your splenetic reviews of Who but that would be boring. Way back when I was arsing about on the internet, I was on one of those endless spelunking trips about John Christopher (I think C had been asking about Death of Grass and that made me remember about the Tripods, which, along with the Burning Lands, was one of my favourite series of books as a ten-year-old) And no sooner had I got into link-clicking, I was all "I wonder what happened to John Shackley and Ceri Seel" (because Ceri Seel was in The Bagthorpes on TV, and *that* was my favourite series of books as a seven-year-old). And for some reason I ended up on LJ and saw that you had Ceri Seel in your list of interests and it seemed such an obscure coincidence that I think I friended you there and then

Of course, if this wasn't you, I've just been a complete idiot. But I think it was.

e) Why Ceri Seel? Or, more seriously, what are your fandoms-you-will-never-leave?

f) Your current default icon is beautiful but I like this one

a) You wrote wonderful stories. I realised you had an LJ and that might mean I would know when you wrote a new one. I found I really liked the way you write about things in your life.
b) Angel fandom. I know it's way in the past for you but I think that's where I first came upon your name.
c) You're that rare combination of measured and funny.
d) I can still remember the lovely "holy cow!" feeling of reading "Vivere". I also still remember your capslock-inclined review of The Unicorn and The Wasp, which tickled me for some reason.
e) What drags you into writing for a fandom rather than just liking it?
f) This one. http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/53061310/939477
Nov. 13th, 2008 10:25 pm (UTC)
I would greatly appreciate it.
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:41 pm (UTC)
a) You were there when I got an LJ and I was all "yes, more of M, please". You write so wonderfully about the things you love. And I've met you. I like you. There was no decision there.
b) I sort of associate you with Buffy, the character. Not just because you defended her as a character at a time when it felt as though fandom as a whole was very much anti, but also because you sometimes seem a bit like her in your efforts to remind the world that we've got a long way to go before society is equal -- weary of the battle but not giving up and not losing your sense of humour
c) See (b)
d) Sitting with you in a bookstore in California and being presented with all these treasures that I had never read. God, my suitcase was heavy. Worth it, though.
e) What are your ur-bands/artists, the ones you can always go back to?
f) This one is just beautiful

Sorry to hear that you're bored. Boredom has been one of the great banes of my existence. The other, of course, is my terrible terrible temper. Which I seem to have inherited from my mother.
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:43 pm (UTC)
I feel guilty when I am bored. Only boring people are bored, and all that, which I don't think is true, it's just that I hear my mum saying it in my head when I say I am bored.

Do you let your temper out, or crunch it into a little box and sit on it? I do the latter, mostly because my parents have volcanic tempers and it used to annoy them far more if I was absolutely cool and insouciant when they were angry with me

Is that like hammer time with more sensible pants?
a) I saw you on [Bad username: sophia_helix"]'s LJ and you were interesting, so I hopped to your LJ and saw that you wrote about shows and music, so that was that.
b) Scary cows
c) You're boundlessly enthusiastic and articulate
d) I loved your post about Beck and Radiohead
e) Why polter-cow? I've read the origin of it but what spoke to you about it

Me! Though I know that d) should be "that time M. totally failed at navigating London transportation and ended up running twenty minutes late and thus blew her chance at having lunch with you, which she still thoroughly regrets."

And for the record, I think I'm coming down on the pro-boss-punching side. Or maybe split the difference and settle for a slap?
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:56 pm (UTC)
a) Again, a no-brainer. I liked your posts on mailing lists, and knew your LJ would be a good, interesting read.
b) I think I associate you with your green man icon. It's such a lovely icon
c) I like your honesty when you talk about your life.
d) Everyone fails at London transport at some point because London transport is sometimes made of fail. Never mind. Next time *g*
e) Do you wish you'd never been in fandom at all? Do you think you can ever approach a new one with shiny, shiny joy once you've done the fandom thing once?
f) The green man or the tarot card one are my favourites.

I think my work spouse M might beat me to the punch.

a) I used to spend a lot of time on friendsfriends and read your entries often
b) Sparkly dancing boys *g*
c) There's a clear-eyed humanity about your entries about your work and your views, and you don't demonise anyone. Also
d) A while ago you linked to a Top Gear set in the SPNverse and I was most definitely O_o but it was cracky fun. I meant to tell you thanks.
e) What drags you into a fandom?
f) I like this one but I can't remember you ever using it

a) I loved your Diaryland blog, which I came upon hopping from blog to blog years and *years* ago. So when I saw you were on LJ, I clicked the button. I think you were the first person I ever friended who I didn't actually know beforehand
b) "Got A Suitcase, Got Regrets" (Which I bought after your pimping)
c) You're funny, enthusiastic and a giver to the rest of the community, which is rarer than I wish it was.
d) I remember really looking forward to your Deathly Hallows post, wondering how you'd react to poor Remus and so on. I just reread it actually.
e) How did you fall into fandom in the first place?
f) Man, it has to be Xander. I really like that icon.

a) You're interesting and you write about things I know about. Sometimes this is such an American space that I want to read about someone who can make jokes about David Blunkett and the Clangers
b) Franz Ferdinand, I think.
c) I just like that you're laconic and sarcastic; I read your posts and feel like I have an idea of who you are and what you like. (That might be erroneous.)
d) I remember you sharing cracky ideas about who the fuck RTD would cast next after Catherine Tate was announced as the new Who companion. Glad to have been proved wrong about the shitness of that decision of RTD's. Journey's End was still wank though.
e) You rule the world. What's your first edict?
f) I really love your taste in icons, actually. But I like this one best and associate it with you:

::jumps on board::

1. I friended you because, well. Because you're my friend and we go back before LJ!
2. There's a Massive Attack song that always makes me think of you. Of course, I can't think of the name off the top of my head, but you gave it to me. Oh, and those wonderful FS cds also make me think of you.
3. I love your sense of humor and your words and your political awareness. And your house. *g*
4. I remember going to Greenwich with you and you were so cool about me dithering about buying that green laptop bag, and then we took the boat back into town and you told stories about all the neighborhoods on the way.
5. How did you end up in fandom, anyway? I'm sure you've told me but I've managed to forget the story.
6. My favorite of your userpics is, rather pathetically, the beautiful one of Crichton in the dungeon. So pretty and alone.
Nov. 14th, 2008 12:54 am (UTC)
If it was a long time ago, it was probably Teardrop or Protection.

5. Every four or five years, I will get a mad enthusiasm for something. A series of books or TV or whatever, and they will sort of... well, I can only describe it as something taking up a lot of space on my mental hard drive for three months or six months or three years or whatever and I seem to be helpless to stop it. XF happened to coincide with the time I got online which is how I ended up there. And suddenly I realised you could write things that people would *read*. And then they would write back. And they were *funny*. So that's how actually acknowledging fandom out loud came about.

And now you:
a) Again, WELL, DUH.
b) Still Crichton and Aeryn, I think. You wrote them so beautifully
c) You're very kind. You're very calm in the face of monumental stupidity. You're very articulate.
d) Heh, climbing up the abbey walls is a good one. Though I think I still remember meeting in that pub and you talking so openly about fandom and I still couldn't talk about it *out loud*.
e) I think I've asked everything I would ask on an open LJ entry. *g*
f) I'm torn. Alpaca or bouncy cricket?
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:22 pm (UTC)
I almost punched my boss in the head again today, but if I had, I would have had to fight my way through a crowd first.

Nov. 14th, 2008 12:57 am (UTC)
a) Again, I reach for "well, duh". You make me laugh and you're interesting
b) The Nats.
c) You're articulate, blunt and funny
d) I remember talking to you on the phone from BD's place
e) What do you want to do next? But I think that's maybe what we're all asking ourselves
f) Weirdly Mobscene. It makes me laugh.

Nov. 14th, 2008 01:02 am (UTC)
a) You were funny and interesting. Then later I was glad I had, for the photos
b) Your photos of the Chicago bean. Or maybe Third Watch
c) I like the way you talk about your life, the open affection you have for people and things.
d) My favourites are actually your posts from the recent election. Your combination of joy and schadenfreude is very familiar.
e) What's with the soap love?
f) This is just gorgeous

*raises feeble hand from the rubble of OMG WORK WHY*
Nov. 14th, 2008 01:10 am (UTC)
a) I loved your posts on Scullyfic; you were so smart and enthused.
b) Playlists of stuff I've never heard of. Glorious playlists of stuff I've never heard of.
c) Your enthusiasm for things like music. You talk about why you like stuff and articulate what's good about it, which I love.
d) Sharing Elbow squee
e) Would you want to live in Canada?
f) I'm fond of guttercat, but for inexplicability and gorgeous colours, this one
