I had to watch that game with French people. That's hardly fair.

They were nice French people, and I liked them a lot, but they were *French*. Which was not good at that very moment when France scored two goals in the last five minutes to win 2-1.

Football is a cruel, cruel game. If only I did not love it so.

Still. A part-GIP, entirely stolen from the Grauniad. I barely filed the serial numbers off it.

Re: Oh NO!!
It's once every four years, interchanging with the world cup. England has never won it and France are the holders. The last time England won anything in football (as far as national competitions go) was 1966. We are the Cubs of international football. *g*

I knew they were going to score from the moment that Beckham missed a penalty. I just didn't anticipate that they would score twice. However, on the night, France were slightly the better team.

Pfeh. I hate being reasonable.

Re: Oh NO!!
A memory, the last time this was played for, in 2000:

We were in Florence, the night Italy beat (I think) the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. The city went batshit: grappa flying everywhere.

A few days later, we were in Paris, when France and Scotland played their match. France won. Paris went batshit; the rather aloof woman behind the counter in Poilane hugged me. It was nuts.

On to London, France and Italy in the final. This time, we got to watch it in a tiny kebab house in Bromley, down in Kent, a few minutes from my sister's flat.

I would hate hate hate to be there when the host country loses.

I bet that was wonderful for the neutral. The French people I was with were saying that the game last night was like the final of Euro 2000, where France were a goal behind to Italy until the last minute, when France scored. Then it went into extra time which France won by a golden goal. So, coming from behind is their speciality and the manager should know that.

That's my next icon right here. Or maybe I should rename my LJ. The French: Coming At You From Behind.

I can't quite believe I wrote that. Still, happy to provide icon fodder *g*

Coming from behind is, indeed, their specialty. The defense has to stiffen after about minute 80. I wonder how many of the 2000 squad are still on?

Poor thing. Nothing like watching your guys lose, in the presence of those supporting the other team. {{{{{K}}}}}

Re: Waaaaaaaah!!!!!!!
I'm still in shock.

1. What *was* Heskey thinking???

2. David James. Just *bah*. Gerrard.

Still. Can't. Believe.

Now we have to beat them in the Final, or there is *no* justice...

Re: Sulkingly...
1. What was Sven thinking, taking off Rooney and bringing on Heskey? As soon as he did that I thought "Shite, now we're in for it" Not only is Heskey a bit of a donkey sometimes, Rooney was the only one who was really bothering them

2. It's not really David James' fault so much as it is Steven Gerrard's. I think they knew a second goal was on the way once they'd conceded the first and they panicked. I thought James was pretty good for the rest of the match, whereas Gerrard looked a bit overwhelmed.

I am so avoiding the telly today. Don't want to know what went wrong, don't care. Shan't look.

Might sound weird, but when Zidane got that penalty, I thought, "Oh, no." Cause he wasn't going to miss it. And I started to feel bad on behalf of all my English buds watching the game at home, who had been five minutes away from a delirious night of beer and fun on the town.

I'm in England tomorrow. I'll bring a hard-hat.
Jun. 14th, 2004 03:32 am (UTC)
You'll be fine without the hard hat.

We know France are a brilliant team and beautiful to watch and it's not like it was Germany, who *always* win *all* the time no matter whether they deserve to or not. I think France just about deserved the win because their football was more fluid and graceful.

Anyway, there just isn't the animosity there with France, but it was a really tough way to lose. Because you're right, once he got that penalty, there was no way on God's clean lovely Earth that Zidane was ever going to miss.
